How to NetworkNetworking TechniquesWhether you are new at networking or a well seasoned pro, networking is a skill that you can continually improve. The major channel for networking is the conversations you have with your fellow networkers. Mastering the art of effective conversation is a vital part of networking. The basic networking conversation can be broken down in to three main sections: 1) Exchanging Names - The name exchange is an opportunity to teach someone else your name and to learn their name. One technique to help your peer remember your name is to repeat your name. This gives the listener the chance to register your name in their mind and the second repetition allows them to memorize your name. Giving the other person a tip on how to remember your name further reinforces their memorization of your name. Make an effort to mentally retain your peer's name. If they are wearing a name tag, take a glance at it. Their name tag is there for a purpose and will further reinforce their name in your mind. Try introducing your new "friend" to someone you already know. Repeating their name will also help cement it into your mind. 2) Presenting Your Job Title - Just stating your occupation does not really tell what you do. Try creating a two sentence introduction. The first sentence describes your talents or skill and the second sentence states a recent success, a project completion, or new skill you have acquired. For example: A Web developer could say. I help my customers utilize Web technology more effectively. As a Web developer, I created a web site that has increased the effective communication of one churches congregation. 3) Making Small Talk - Be prepared for making small talk. Plan a couple of questions or topics for discussion before hand. The topics should keep within the parameters of something you know, care about, or are looking for. A suggestion is to have at least one business related response and one personal response. Becoming a networking pro does not happen overnight. Continue improving your skills and you are sure to meet with success!
